Addition/ Subtraction/Word Problems/Math Vocabulary
Last week we reviewed 3 digit addition problems. Then, we ventured off into addition word problems. I taught the third graders a song to help them remember steps to solving a word problem easier. We also went over key words and the students put a copy in their math journals for an aditional reference. This week we will review subtracting with regrouping and then work on word problems.

Projector Fun
We are fortunate enough to have one projector that is shared among the five third grade classrooms. Today we did some Spellingcity and some GoNoodle. If you know of any company that would kindly donate a projector to our classroom please feel free to let me know! I've contacted Epsom but they only donate once a year..

Newmarket Project
On Friday, excitement filled the air as students got to choose a business in Newmarket to interview. We reviewed the packet that included and introductiary page, a script page, and a couple pages of questions students can ask. The due date for this interview is September 30th. We will be doing the written report in class. The businesses the students chose are aware of this project and have been great at helping in the past, however, if for whatever reason there is difficulty in getting an interview, please let me know and another business can be chosen. Thank you for your help!

Rounding scoot
We've been practicing rounding to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100. Students "scooted" around the classroom to answer task cards.
A little song to help them remember is "5 and above give it a shove. 4 and below let it go."

Weekly Multiplication Quizzes
Dear Families,
As you know, multiplication is taught in third
grade. We will begin our weekly multiplication quizzes this week. To start, we
will work on the 0’s table. Children should know their facts by memory without
counting on fingers or using repeated addition. The children will receive a
copy of the facts at the beginning of the week, there will be a practice sheet
that can be completed at home (you may want to run off several copies), and a
timed test will be given in class on Friday. It is vital that facts are
memorized for success in mathematics. Many students will need additional
support and practice at home in order to accomplish this goal. As always,
thanks for your continued cooperation.

What are these tools?
Students worked in groups to decide what the tool in the picture is and how it was used. They acted it out for their classmates. These tools were once used back in the days of Old Newmarket.

Place Value
Today we reviewed place value up to the thousands. The common core has an emphasis on being able to explain answers and thinking, so I prompt students with questions like. "What do you think?", "How do you know this?", "Can you prove it?", "Explain your thinking." We will continue working to compare large numbers to the hundred thousands.

Papers students are responsible for.
I have made a September calendar that tells the students what subjects are for their nightly 30 minutes of homework (third grade has 30 minutes of HW) and of important dates.
Each day the students fill in the missing components in their homework assignment log.
The last paper is a monthly reading log. Each night as students complete their 20 minutes of reading, they fill in the information, parents sign off, and return it at the end of the month to receive credit. It is due on Wednesday, October 1st.

Getting to know you crafts
Students created a name plate glyph!
After reading the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, we discussed what makes us wilt and what makes us bloom. Students wrote about it and created a craft to go along with it.
